ALSO KNOWN AS THE GOLDEN TRIANGLE

POINT STATE PARK, 36 acres at the confluence of the Allegheny, Monongahela, and Ohio Rivers, commemorates the planting of Anglo-Saxon civilization on the American frontier in 1754.

Also located at the park is the BLOCKHOUSE, built in 1764. 412-471-1764; and FT. PITT MUSEUM, which focuses on the early history of Western Pennsylvania and the French and Indian War period.

BAYERNHOF MUSEUM

The History of Bayernhof

In the latter part of his life, Charles Brown III developed a passion for collecting old, rare automatic musical instruments. That collection is now part of the Bayernhof Museum.

His collection is displayed in almost every room in the house. There are many antique music boxes, “monkey” organs, a Wurlitzer carousel organ, a Reproduco Piano-Pipe organ used in funeral homes and theaters, an Encore Automatic Banjo. There is also a Mills Deluxe Violano Virtuoso player violin and piano combination, a Knabe Ampico reproducing grand piano that faithfully “reproduces” the playing of the artist who originally recorded the roll and a huge Seeburg Pipe Organ Orchestra that was once used to accompany silent films to name just a few. Be sure to select the "Collection" button on the left and see most of the collection, of course a better way is to arrange a tour.

In his will, Charles Brown III directed that his instruments be restored and his house opened to the public as a museum. Charles was the founder and chief executive officer of Gas-Lite Manufacturing, he died in 1999.

BEECHWOOD FARMS NATURE RESERVE

Beechwood Farms Nature Reserve, located in the Borough of Fox Chapel, has been headquarters for the Audubon Society of Western Pennsylvania since 1977, when Mrs. John F. Walton, Jr. and Mr. and Mrs. Joshua C. Whetzel, Jr. donated 90 acres of farmland to the Western Pennsylvania Conservancy. The Conservancy, while retaining ownership of the land, chose the Audubon Society of Western Pennsylvania to manage and operate the property as a nature center.

This most generous arrangement resulted in the establishment of one of the largest nature reserves and environmental education centers in western Pennsylvania. Beechwood's 134 acres contain more than five miles of walking trails, which are open to the public from dawn to dusk everyday, year-round. The reserve offers a variety of outdoor experiences. Its indoor facilities include the Audubon Nature Store, a 125-seat auditorium, an bird feeder observation room and a Natural History and Teacher Resource Library.

HARTWOOD

215 Saxonburg Blvd
Pittsburgh, PA
(412) 767-9200

Hartwood is an Allegheny County Park consisting of 629 acres. Preserved within the park is one of the largest and most spectacular country estates in the region. Hartwood consists of a stately Tudor Mansion (erected in 1929) cottage, stable complex and gate lodge (erected in 1927). Designed by Alfred Hopkins for John and Mary Flinn Lawrence, the mansion houses an excellent collection of original English and American antiques. Its 16th century architectural design affords both young and old opportunity to glimpse into a part of Pittsburgh's past.

Not surprisingly, a large part of Hartwood's charm lies in its scenic setting. Reflect upon a time of elegance and style while strolling through the formal gardens.

Hike or horseback along its wooded trails or cross country ski depending on the season. Visit the farm and stable complex, appreciate the sculptures or see a concert under the stars.

Hartwood is full of possibilities. Whether you are a teacher, student, with a corporation or tour group, Hartwood has something special for everyone.
